CPD: Iron Essentials: Homeostasis, Diagnostics & Real-World Cases

Blood Academy · July 21, 2025

This CPD course provides a comprehensive foundation in iron metabolism and the diagnostic approach to iron deficiency. It is designed for clinicians and laboratory scientists involved in the interpretation of iron studies in clinical practice.

Course details

This course is divided into three key sections:

  1. Iron physiology and homeostasis
Understand how iron is absorbed, transported, utilised, and recycled in the body. This section covers the distribution of iron across functional, storage, and transport compartments, and explores the regulatory role of hepcidin in systemic iron balance.

  2. Diagnostic testing in iron deficiency
Learn how to interpret a range of laboratory investigations — from the full blood count and blood film to biochemical indices such as serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, serum iron, and TIBC. The course also introduces more advanced tests, including reticulocyte haemoglobin content (CHr/Ret-He), % hypochromic red cells (%HRC), and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR).

  3. Case-based application
Apply your learning to real-world clinical scenarios. This section presents iron deficiency in varied contexts — including chronic inflammation, renal disease, heart failure, and chronic blood loss — to highlight common diagnostic challenges and interpretive pitfalls.

We will use video tutorials and an end-of-course assessment that awards a certificate upon successful completion.

It is estimated this course will take you 2-3 hours to complete.

The target audience for this course are:

  • Haematology trainees and consultants
  • Haematopathology trainees and specialists
  • Biomedical scientists/medical laboratory scientists

Your course certificate will be available for download after successfully completing the course assessment. If you have difficulty downloading your certificate, please email admin@blood-academy.com for further assistance.
